Mental Health First Aid for Veterans, Military Members and their Families is based upon the Adult Mental Health First Aid curriculum; much of the content is identical, but includes additional information and scenarios specific to Veterans and Service Members:
- Military culture and its relevance to the topic of mental health.
- Specific risk factors faced by many service members and their families such as mental and physical trauma, stress, separation, etc.
- How to break down the stigma associated with substance use disorders and mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how to reach out to those who suffer in silence or may be reluctant to seek help.
- Community resource information and support will be discussed.
Adult Mental Health First Aid teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions.
The training covers:
• Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
• Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
• How to interact with a person in crisis.
