YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (YMHFA)

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The class is teaches parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, social service staff, faith community staff and volunteers and other caring community  members how to support a young person (age 12-18) experiencing a mental health issue, addictions challenge or a crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth and provides a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations.

What you will learn in this eight-hour course:

  • How to notice signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges in young people, ages 12-18 years old.:
  • How to safely apply the five step first aid plan.
  • How to approach and support young people experiencing mental health and substance use issues in the early stages, as symptom worsen, and/or in an immediate crisis.
  • How to connect the young person (and their family) with professional supports and other help.
  • The importance of self-care for everyone including the first aider.
  • National, state and local community resources available to offer support.

Participants will receive an informational workbook that includes content from the training and more as well as a list of community resources.

  • Earn three-year certification

Blended/Online

What to expect:

  • Two online presentations – the first part of the course is self-paced (approximately two to two and one-half hours); the second part is scheduled online (six hours) or in person.  Participants must complete both parts to be certified.
