AID (Awareness, Interaction, Direction)
AID is a 60 to 90-minute, evidence-based, mental health awareness training that teaches individuals how to interact effectively with someone experiencing mental distress using three steps:
- Awareness: Recognizing signs and symptoms of distress
- Interaction: Effectively interacting with someone in distress
- Direction: Locating and providing resources to individuals in distress
AID was developed from a need to educate people about mental health and stigma around mental illness, as well as to provide information on how to best intervene in situations where a person is experiencing mental distress.
AID training uses social and health behavior change theories, including Social Cognitive Theory and the Broaden and Build Theory of Positive Emotions, as its conceptual framework.
Other key components of this training include:
- Engaging in a series of open-ended discussions that help participants explore their beliefs and perceptions about mental health
- Practicing the AID action plan using relevant scenarios
- Reducing stigma about mental illness and substance use
- Promoting self-care
Once registered, you will receive a registration confirmation email. In addition, an email will be sent 2-3 days prior to the training date with preparation instructions and the Zoom link.
